How To Be The Expert in Your Small Business!

Be the EXPERT is really getting YOU to realize that you need to sell your products and/or services with confidence and RIGHTSELL the customer.

What’s RIGHT-SELLING?

Some people call this upselling, at Make Your Mark Training, we call it right-selling – making sure you sell your customer the right products and/or services to ensure they get the results or the solution that they want.

At Make Your Mark we say, “When you have a great product or service, you owe it to your customer to sell it to them well!”

In many instances we do not think about the opposite of not selling somebody the most appropriate combination of products and/or services that best suits their needs, and have clients returning or going somewhere else disgruntled because you did not deliver the RESULTS or SOLUTIONS they were looking for!

A few good examples to get your creative juices flowing:

A SERVICE: Chiropractor

When you go to see a Chiropractor and they do their evaluation and give you only the one treatment you are looking for and then let you leave their rooms, knowing that according to the injury you had, that 5 treatments would be ideal to get you back on track, they are doing you a disservice by allowing you to leave their practice. If you ask the Chiropractor WHEN should I book next and they say… maybe 1 – 2 weeks from now… they have done you a disservice.

They know what is ideal for you and should be informing you that according to your injury and after the initial treatment  that you need to return each week for the next 5 weeks to ensure the injury is easily overcome and that no further damage is done.

If they demand only one treatment and that’s it. It’s your choice to treat them knowing that it’s your reputation on the line. You may turn them away or convince them otherwise, but if you do just a single treatment and let them go… you have done them a disservice that could hurt your businesses reputation.

Of course this has to be done with integrity and heart – you only sell a package when you know it’s the RIGHT thing to sell your clients!

What packages can you sell in your business?

A PRODUCT: Migraine Product

If you sell a migraine product and only sell customers what they ask for, you are not right-selling them, especially if you know that people that suffer from migraines often suffer from insomnia and lethargy. By packaging products in groups you can let them know you are the expert by selling them the Migraine Relief Package that consists of 3 products; Migraine, Sleep and Energy – this is truly being the EXPERT and RIGHT-SELLING the clients.

A SERVICE: Bookkeeper/Accountant

As a bookkeeper you know that it’s best for a client to have their books done weekly or monthly or daily dependent on the size and type of business. If you ask a client how frequently they would like their books checked and updated, and you know it should be weekly, you are doing them a disservice.

What are some of the KEY things to focus on – starting NOW!

  1. What can you do to RIGHT-SELL your clients?

  2. What packages can you create that you believe you can sell? Remember to keep your packages simple, create VALUE and make them a better price than individual units, sessions, etc.

  3. It’s also recommended to keep the number of packages to 3 – too many creates confusion.

  4. Think about what your product or service does for the customer in terms of days/weeks/months after they have used it. What could they be experiencing that you could call and check-in with them about? Example: If you start a body cleanse and you drink a lot of coffee you will possibly experience headaches – you can call 48 hours after the start of the program and check-in with the client. Let them know you are the expert and what they may be experiencing. It’s amazing.

What can you do to increase your CONFIDENCE in what you sell?

  1. You are an EXPERTS in your own right – own it!

Finally, remember that packages, programs, etc. do not sell themselves… FOLLOW-UP is critical!

How long are you hold onto things

There is no such things as “Having a BAD Day”

Taking things personally is one thing, but how long you hold onto these things is 100% your choice!

You’ve heard many people say I am having a bad day. My question is does it have to be a bad day or can it just be a bad moment, a bad hour or a bad half day? It is truly your choice of how long you hold onto these given situations. In fact, you should be looking at it as not “bad” but what can I LEARN from these given situations?

A good example is when you got to visit a client and you anticipate taking their order or signing the contract, and things do not go the way you thought they would. The client ends up beating you down on price, not giving you the terms that you want, or possibly just not signing the contract and you walk away with no order. For many people they take these situations extremely personally, when you should be truly be asking yourself, what can I learn from the situation and what was my contribution to the given situation? Simple things like the following:

  • How can I prepare more effective the next time?
  • What research could I have done to improve the situation?
  • What needs to be done to ensure it happens next time?

If you have done all of the above and you still don’t get the contract, do not beat yourself up but rather say “NEXT” and move onto somebody who has the greater potential of becoming your customer.

What I really want you to get from this, is that how you approach every situation will determine the outcome and results you achieve. You can either look at everything as a learning situation or experience, take what you need and decide to move on or you can let it destroy your day, week, month, etc! From my experience this will be the demise of your business, the sooner you understand that every situation that arises in your business is because of the choices that you have made the better!

Holding onto things and taking them personally kills productivity, creativity and profitability!

There are some things that are so ingrained in us from childhood, whether it be the habits we received from our parents, siblings, etc. or just key experiences that have shaped who we are today. There are many life experiences as a child that dramatically impact who you are as an adult and how you approach things, even as an entrepreneur. We do cover a lot of this at our Business Mastery – Power in YOU! seminar and will be writing an entire book on the topic in the future.

Your thoughts completely dictate what is showing up in your life right now! At the Business Mastery 1 – Power in YOU! event we train people to be extremely self-aware and self-observant in what you say and what you think about the most.

I hear thousands of different life impacting statements every single day that are hindering people from achieving the success they deserve, and the sad part is most people do not even realize that they are doing it.

Here are a few key examples:

  1. I am not good at that.
  2. It’s tough in our industry right now!
  3. I cannot remember names.
  4. I hate looking at my numbers.
  5. People never return my phone calls.
  6. I am not good at doing videos.
  7. It’s hard to find profitable clients.
  8. Our business is seasonal and we are slow in…
  9. The economy has changed.
  10. I don’t like sales or selling.
  11. I keep on getting tough clients!
  12. I don’t have the success formula.
  13. What you teach does not work in my industry.

It’s very simple, until you start reframing these statements you will continue to attract them into your life and business and will keep achieving the same results. Because your mind does not know right from wrong, it will just give you what you say and think about most.

If you say you cannot remember names, guess what, you will never be able to remember names because you keep on reinforcing your mind to think you cannot remember names, every time you say it. The more you say self-defeating statements the more you ingrain them into your being.

There are simple steps you can take to improve the situation and the most important is being self-aware and catching yourself saying or thinking statements that are self-defeating and not enhancing or adding to your life or your business.

When you catch yourself doing it you cannot just switch them automatically and go from one extreme to the other, by saying I am great at remembering names, because your mind will sub-consciously say “bull shitter” and you will revert back to your common belief.

What you need to say is “I am in the process of remembering all names”. Your sub-conscious mind can accept this as it is plausible and the more you say it the more you will believe it, and the better you will become at remembering names.

Now, you can use this in every aspect of your life and business. The more self-aware and self-observant you become about what you are saying and thinking about the more you will increase the success in your own life.

If you are continually thinking about the debt you have or the lack of results, guess what they will continue to show up! You have to really start to reprogram yourself and get into new supportive success statements in all areas of your life.

Be careful though as you do not want to focus on what you don’t want. If you keep on having difficult clients, rather than saying I am finding fewer difficult clients, say I have amazing money making clients coming my way. If you say I am finding fewer difficult clients, your brain is still focused on the difficult clients and they will continue to show-up. In the movie the secret this is clearly explained by the late Mother Theresa who always said she would go to a peace rally but never an anti-war rally – if you focus on anti-war you get war! What you resist persists!

I cannot believe how many people struggle in business yet they are not prepared to CHANGE.

Entrepreneurs are Addicts!

I believe that we are all creatures of habit and that our lives are made of habits; some extremely supportive towards success and others that impede us from getting where we want to be! In order to move your business to the next level and change the results you are achieving you have to significantly change your non-supportive or negative habits.

I call them addictions because you may be holding on to what you believe, and feel they are aiding you, but from the outside others can see that they are habits that will never build success. This is very much like being an alcoholic and until you decide to check-in for rehab you are not going to ever get yourself out of the poor non-supportive habits. I joke with many of our students as a lot of our courses are called Warrior courses or have the name Warrior in them and I have the plan in the future to add Intervention Warrior, to really get business owners and entrepreneurs to check-in to business rehab so that we can eliminate the non-supportive habits from their lives and businesses.

Do you have addictions and habits that are non-supportive and that are holding you back from achieving greatness in your business and life?

The biggest part to addictions is to first admit that you have a problem and from there take the necessary action in order to overcome the challenges. Rules Take Stress Out of Your Business!

If clients are calling you at all hours, they are in control of your business and life!

I also find that the success you achieve is directly related to how much structure you have in your business. The more rules and structure you have and adhere to, the more your customers respect you and the better your results. If you do not respect yourself by creating rules in your own life and business, why should a customer respect you? Often, if you have no rules, your customers make them for you, or you make them up on the fly, which causes long-term problems and challenges. This is where we end up with clients in our databases that we would love to fire—but it’s not their fault we had no rules!

There are only two sets of rules in business: your rules and the customers’ rules. You want to run your business according to your rules. Otherwise, you will have your clients making rules for you that you are not pleased with, and they will be truly in charge of your business.

Here are a few examples of the rules that you should have in your business to create the structure that you want:

There are a lot more of these rules and structures that you can put in place, but the most important part is understanding that when you have rules in place, it lets your prospects and clients know that you have a structured business. At certain times you may have to deviate slightly from these rules, and you should either modify the rule you have or make an exception. Exceptions should be extremely rare. If you are often making exceptions, then you need to relook at the rules you have in place and adjust them accordingly.

Many rules are broken because the entrepreneur does not want to let their client down and feels compelled to win the order, or maybe does not want to upset the client or prospect. Deviating from your rules causes chaos and often ongoing expectations. And it only lets your client know that you can be manipulated into changing things to suit them. Once you let a client walk over you, they will continue to expect this and in some cases will drive you crazy!

If you are forever shifting the rules, you will cause chaos in your business, and you will be running according to rules that your clients make up for you. They will often bring their friends who expect the same, and you will end up with a database of clients you’re serving for little to no income! Remember, you do have the right to fire clients. At our Sales Warrior event, we talk about value and finding and retaining clients. The most important skill you need to learn in sales is that “cost is only an issue in the absence of value,” and that if you are dropping your price, you most likely do not understand your value. We have a specialized process called the value calculator that people learn at the Sales Warrior event to assist with determining value. Once you know your value, you will very seldom reduce your price.

We have lived by the headline, “Is finding more clients causing you stress?” But adding a single word makes it go hand-in-hand with value: “Is finding profitableclients causing you stress?”

I always say that clients are like children: when you have a well-structured environment, it leads them to respect you and understand that you are in control of where your business is going. If we have no rules for children, chaos prevails, and that’s often what I see in many small businesses. Pricing varies from one client to another, discounts are not fixed, and clients can call them any time.

The most important part of setting rules is ensuring that you follow them. This demonstrates to your clients, colleagues, and staff that you know what you are doing.

You might say that you don’t have rules in your business because you are small or a start-up and that it’s not important, but in fact it’s critical. The sooner you set the rules, the sooner you will find profitable and ideal clients. Sadly, many entrepreneurs break the rules because the order the client is holding is more than what is in the entrepreneur’s bank account, so they drop their price and are completely abused by the client. Also, when you capitulate and drop your price, your client often goes out and tells others, and now you have a number of clients wanting the same service and/or product for the same prices. This is when you start limiting your success in your business!

There are some instances when you may alter the rules, and a good one is when you want to get a client onboard who will add a ton of credibility to your business and whom you know you can use in your marketing to generate more clients. The most important part is setting the rules for the deal, and also ensuring that the rules are extremely well communicated to the client.

I have trained for many large organizations like Sun Life Financial, Curves, Bank of Montreal, Bank of Nova Scotia, and Fitness Town, and I can tell you that I structured an outrageous offer to get Sun Life Financial onboard. I knew that once they were a client, I could use their name in meetings and proposals (with testimonials), and if they trusted me, it would add huge credibility to who I am and what I can deliver. Because of Sun Life Financial, I ended up winning the Bank of Montreal as a client at my full rate.

Creating Your Sales Force That Never Stop Selling Your Product Or Service!

There is a BIG difference!

A Salesperson is somebody who can make Cold-Calls (Action Calls as we say at Make Your Mark) and can actively get out there, establish and build relationships and sell. When you are interviewing for a top notch salesperson you should be asking them if they love Action Calling and getting out and meeting people. Many times we hire a salesperson to look after existing accounts that we have in our businesses and wonder why they are not going out and Action Calling? It’s because they are  account managers or executives that only like to look after established accounts or connections – they do not like starting relationships… it’s often just not their thing and that’s okay!

Great salespeople are like hunters looking for the next opportunity and will jump on the internet and look for places where their ideal prospects hangout and go out without any fear to meet them, build relationships and sell their products.

You have to decide when you hire somebody for a sales role if you are hiring an account manager to look after your existing accounts or a salesperson who knows what it takes to establish new accounts. Both are very important to business, yet it fascinates me how many business owners hire what they believe to be a top notch salesperson and they really are only  a glorified account manager.

One can definitely support the other, just make sure you are very clear about the position and role that you are hiring for.
